A New Year and a new organ!
Hello and Happy New Year to everyone! Most of the time when I post interesting information on this blog, I do so after getting an update from the GI community. But today, I got an update from one of our very own technologists, Scott Loden MB(ASCP)! Fortunately, Scott popped in my office this morning to ask if I heard the news—the medical community is welcoming a new organ to the current list of organs we humans count among our own! Researchers have classified a brand-new organ inside our bodies, but it’s one that’s been hiding in plain sight in our digestive system this whole time—the mesentery.
So, what IS the mesentery?? Well, it’s a fold of peritoneum, or the lining of the abdominal cavity, that attaches our intestine to the wall of our abdomen, and keeps everything locked in place. As a pathology resident, I always believed the mesentery was just something to be moved out of the way to get to the more ‘important’ organs. But this latest revelation just tells us that there is always something new and exciting to learn when it comes to our bodies, and especially the gastrointestinal tract!
Welcome to 2017, mesentery!
